Samba, Gazelle or Campus? The Comparison

Three flat suede sneakers from adidas, all three in heavy demand right now – and hard to tell apart on a white screen. On foot the differences are obvious: the Samba, Gazelle and Campus fit differently, look different and work with different outfits.

Where they come from

The Samba is the oldest of the three and comes out of indoor football around 1950. Hence the gum sole, the low build and the suede toe cap – originally wear protection, now the giveaway detail.

The Gazelle arrived in 1966 as a training shoe. All suede, a large stripe on the side and strong colours.

The Campus has its roots in 1980s basketball. Thicker suede, a taller sole, a boxier shape.

Sizing: half a size down on all three

All three tend to run large – but for different reasons.

Samba: narrow and long. The common advice is half a size down. With a wider foot, stay true to size or it gets tight across the ball.
Gazelle: cut narrow, a little long. Half a size down works for most people.
Campus: boxy last, so more room across the front. Still usually half a size down.

Comfort: don't expect too much

None of the three is a cushioned shoe. The soles are thin, the insoles flat, and you feel the ground. The Samba is the harshest of them, the Campus the most forgiving thanks to its thicker sole.

For long days on your feet all three are the wrong call. A thin insole helps a little, but it costs room – and on models this narrow you notice that.

With an outfit

Samba: the most versatile. Works with slim and straight trousers, understated enough for almost anything.
Gazelle: lives off its colour. Strongest when the rest of the outfit stays quiet.
Campus: wants a bit more volume around it, good with wider trousers.

Care: suede is the catch

All three are largely suede. That means dry brushing rather than washing, a waterproofing spray before the first wear, and – if they do get wet – dampening the whole panel evenly so you don't end up with tide marks.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the Samba OG and the Samba Vegan?

The vegan version swaps leather and suede for synthetic materials. The shape stays the same; the upper feels slightly stiffer.

Do all three fit the same?

Similar in length, not in width. The Campus is the boxiest, the Samba the narrowest.

Which is the most comfortable?

The Campus, because of the thicker sole. The gap isn't large though – all three are low-built.

Can you wear them in the rain?

Better not. Suede takes on water and keeps the marks. With a waterproofing spray they'll survive a shower, no more than that.
